Celebrate the life and legacy of artist Ernest "Ernie" Eugene Barnes, Jr. From June 29, 2018, to May 27, 2019, The North Carolina Museum of History will host an exhibit of the artist's work. Born in Durham, North Carolina, Barnes was a professional football player who retired at the age of 27 to pursue his love of art. His iconic 1970s painting "The Sugar Shack" was used in the "Good Times" television series and adapted for the cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" album. Barnes’ work is unique for its vibrancy, movement and elongated figures.
