Description 

Owen’s “Apples” is a folk art painting that depicts two women selling apples. Her subjects are outfitted in brightly colored dresses and headscarves One woman is seated on a wooden chair, while the other is seated on a wooden stool. They appear to be in conversation, perhaps discussing the sweetness of the apples or a cherished recipe. With this piece of art, the artist implores the viewer to see these women and to reject the harmful, troubling historical tropes that have been projected onto Black women because of their skin color or other physical attributes. Owen recognizes that the lips and noses of black women are often mocked, and with this work she chooses to exalt these features. To celebrate the beauty of these women and anyone who has been viewed through a lens of “otherness” and made to feel less than. This work, along with the “String Beans” painting, explores intersectional experiences of identity, such as those related to race, gender, colorism, and class.
